I had known about Pilates for a few years but only had a vague notion of what it was all about, when I started attending a Stott Pilates class and soon realised that there was much more to it than just sitting straighter and standing taller. I began to understand the connection between the moves I was being taught and the strengthening of the core muscles which gave support to my back. I was surprised that even after just a few weeks, I could feel how the different muscle groups were working during the moves and could sense them becoming stronger.

Over ten years later and I can say that since taking up Pilates I haven’t had any further issues with my back problem, other than the occasional niggle. And I don’t believe that’s just coincidence. I believe that regular Pilates sessions have not only improved my core strength and posture but have also increased my knowledge and understanding of my own anatomy which has given me the tools to try and protect my body from injury when performing simple day-to-day tasks such as lifting, carrying and moving even the most innocuous of objects.

I also believe that Pilates can be a great ally to other forms of exercise, as the core is so integral to most physical pursuits.
